Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

Bone Grafting for Dental Implants

A bone graft is a surgical procedure (typically performed by Specialist Surgeons) that replaces and regenerates jaw bone volume in order to successfully place dental implants. If there is insufficient bone, the dental implant will not be able to attach to the jaw and will either fail or fail prematurely. Anesthesia is administered prior to surgery to alleviate any discomfort. After cleaning the area, the dentist makes an incision through the gum tissue to expose the area that requires the bone graft. The dentist will then graft a section of bone from another part of your body, or a special bone grafting material, onto the jaw bone where it is needed.

Benefits Dental Bone Grafts

Dental bone grafts can increase the eligibility for dental implants and other restorative treatments. This procedure restores the jaw to its original form following trauma, tooth loss, or gum (periodontal) disease.

What will the Recovery Be Like?

Patients should always follow the instructions their surgeons give them, as they can differ from patient to patient. In general, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activity for two to three days after having a bone graft. Swelling is normal. Patients can apply ice packs for 20 minutes at a time during the first 48 hours to minimize swelling. The surgeon can prescribe pain medication to keep the patient comfortable and antibiotics to prevent infections.

What are the Risks or Complications of Dental Bone Grafts?

Bone grafts in your mouth are generally safe. However, the procedure carries some risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Heavy bleeding
  • Nerve damage
  • Complications from anesthesia

How Long Does It Take to Recover From a Dental Bone Graft?

Though you will probably feel back to normal within a week or two, complete dental bone graft healing can take between three and nine months – sometimes longer. Recovery times depend on several factors, including the type of graft, the area in which the graft was placed, and your body’s healing capacity.

What are the Dental Bone Graft Healing Stages?

The recovery period can vary significantly from patient to patient. Once the bone graft is placed, the dentist will monitor your healing. If patients are waiting to undergo dental implant surgery, they will let you know when their new bone is strong enough to support the implant.
