Zirconium Crown

Zirconium Crown

Zirconium crowns are made of zirconium oxide or zirconium. X-rays show radiopaque features in zirconium. Additionally, the tooth color is whiter than with other treatments. There are no unsightly gray lines on ceramic crowns like those made from metal. They are known to have a natural appearance. Zirconium crowns are often difficult to distinguish from natural teeth. When metal-based crowns are used, it is recommended to attach zirconium crowns to the teeth to give a more natural appearance to the teeth because the gum line tends to darken. Furthermore, they are happily accepted by the tissues in the mouth and they have more lifetime compared to normal crowns.

Benefits of Zirconium Crowns

  • Strength and durability
  • Biocompatibility
  • Longevity
  • Metal-free
  • Easily modified, reshaped, and colored
  • The amount of tooth structure removed is less.
  • Translucency
  • Natural tooth appearance

In which cases are Zirconium Crowns Used?

  • Hereditary structure discoloration in advanced colorations (antibiotics, fluorine, etc.) that cannot be removed by bleaching,
  • After previous tooth extraction,
  • Closure of gaps between teeth (diastema closure),
  • Patients with metal-supported bridges/crowns in their mouths,
  • In the correction of broken teeth,
  • In the correction of discolored and structured old tooth fillings,
  • In the straightening of crooked teeth,
  • Zirconium crowns can be applied to teeth with excessive material loss that cannot be filled.

How Long Do Zirconium Crowns Last?

Even though the lifespan of zirconia crowns depends on the usage of the patient, brushing their teeth regularly or using mouthwash daily, it is 10 years. The lifespan of zirconia crowns is longer than other veneers, yet they should be renewed after 10 years. Normally eating or drinking doesn’t cause any harm to zirconia crowns. With regular dental care and the patient’s jaw structure, they can be used for more than 10 years.

Is Getting Zirconium Crowns Painful?

Zirconium crown treatment is not a painful procedure. This treatment is performed under local anesthesia, and patients don’t feel any pain at any phase of the treatment. Patients may only feel sensitivity on the gums surrounding the crowned teeth after the cementing step. This sensitivity and discomfort can last for a couple of days. Rarely, some patients have sensitivity lasting up to a month. In general, sensitivity decreases gradually.
